Excise Product Registration UAE — Common Questions
Do I need to register each product separately?
Yes. Each individual excise product — including different sizes, variants, or flavours of the same brand — must be registered separately with the FTA. A company selling 10 SKUs of energy drinks must register all 10 individually. A single company registration does not cover individual products.
What information does FTA require for product registration?
The FTA requires: product name and brand, product category, HS code, country of manufacture, manufacturer details, list of ingredients, retail selling price, and any applicable certifications. For tobacco products, additional regulatory approvals may be required.
Can I import excise goods before product registration is approved?
No. The product must be registered and approved by the FTA before the first import. Attempting to import without a product code will result in customs detention of the shipment. Registration must be completed and approved — not merely submitted — before import.
How long does FTA take to approve product registration?
FTA typically approves straightforward excise product registrations within 10-15 business days. Products with unusual ingredients, unclear classifications, or missing documentation take longer. We submit complete applications to avoid delays.
What if I change my product's recipe or retail price?
Any material change to an excise product — including ingredient changes that affect classification, changes to retail selling price, or rebranding — requires updating the FTA product registration before the changed product is sold. Selling a product under an outdated registration can lead to incorrect excise tax calculations.
